Transforming a historic church into a welcoming home for shared Worship and community

Creating a Flexible, Sustainable Church for Future Generations

Allan Joyce Architects worked with Beeston Methodist Church to transform a much-loved historic landmark into a more flexible, accessible and sustainable building that better supports both worship and the wider community.

As the needs of congregations and local communities continue to evolve, the project reimagines the church as a welcoming, multi-purpose space capable of accommodating worship, community activities, performances, meetings and events, ensuring the building continues to serve future generations.

A More Flexible Place for Worship

A key objective of the project was to create a more adaptable internal environment without losing the character of the historic church.

The removal of fixed pews, remodelling of the existing balconies and alterations to the organ platform have transformed the main worship space into a bright, open and flexible hall that can easily accommodate a much wider range of activities. Removing two-thirds of the existing balcony has introduced significantly more natural light, creating a welcoming environment that supports both the congregation and the many community groups that use the building.

Caring for a Historic Building

Alongside improving functionality, the project carefully restores and upgrades the historic fabric of the church.

A new roof, improved insulation and breathable lime plaster and paint help protect the building while improving its thermal performance and ensuring the historic structure can continue to perform as intended for many years to come.

Supporting a Net Zero Future

As a member of the Eco Church Network, Beeston Methodist Church is committed to reducing its environmental impact and long-term operating costs.

The refurbishment includes photovoltaic panels, improved insulation and upgraded mechanical and electrical systems to significantly improve the building's energy efficiency. These measures help reduce carbon emissions while creating a more comfortable and sustainable environment for everyone who uses the church.

Our Role
