Mike joined AJA as an architect in 1998, after studying at Newcastle University and the University of Nottingham, and is now an Associate Director. He is also a member of the RIBA.
He has wanted to be an architect for as long as he can remember and always loved buildings, making things and drawing.
For Mike, seeing something he’s drawn built so he can walk around it and touch it is the best moment on each project. On every project he is involved in, he is passionate about providing the best buildings possible for the budget available. He loves working on social housing where there is the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of the residents through seemingly small design interventions.
Fredensborg Houses (similar to the Kingo courtyard houses at Helsingør) in Denmark by Jørn Utzon are Mike’s favourite buildings. He likes them because they’re ‘small’, intimately scaled houses that provide privacy and views for all the residents that were built at a relatively low cost to provide social housing. There’s nothing flash or ostentatious, just well-crafted buildings using local materials with enough flexibility to allow the residents to live how they want.
When he’s not at work, Mike continues his love of architecture by building anything he can with his children; sometimes it’s Lego or cardboard but most of the times it’s whatever they can get their hands on!
