Evesham Baptist Church had outgrown its existing building and needed a new home that could support both worship and its expanding programme of community outreach.
Following the donation of a four-acre site, Allan Joyce Architects were appointed to design a new church that would bring together faith, community and flexible spaces for future generations.
The result is a contemporary church building designed around a simple principle: creating a welcoming place where people can gather, connect and grow.
From the moment visitors arrive, the design creates a strong sense of welcome. The entrance leads into a light-filled gathering space that acts as the heart of the building, providing a place for people to meet before and after services and events.
A large glazed connection between the gathering space and sanctuary allows the two areas to work together during larger events, giving the church flexibility to accommodate different types of worship and community activities.
The community spaces have been designed to support a wide range of users, from children's groups to meetings and outreach activities. Flexible layouts, outdoor access and non-structural partitions allow the spaces to adapt as the needs of the church and community change over time.
The journey through the building has been carefully considered, creating a visual and emotional connection between the community areas and the sanctuary.
As visitors move through the building, views towards the worship space create a sense of arrival and reflection. Curved acoustic walls guide people towards the sanctuary, where the ceiling rises and opens to create a dramatic and uplifting environment.
The contemporary semi-circular sanctuary focuses attention towards the central stage, cross and baptistry, while extensive glazing brings natural light into the space.
Specialist acoustic design and audio-visual technology were integrated into the building to support modern worship, presentations and community events. Hearing loops are also provided throughout to ensure the building is accessible for all.
Alongside the main worship and community spaces, the building includes offices, meeting rooms and storage areas to support the everyday running of the church.
A dedicated prayer room provides a quieter environment for reflection and contemplation. Softened corners, an integrated curved bench, accessible seating and a central rooflight create a calm and welcoming space for individual prayer and small group use.
Allan Joyce Architects specialise in designing churches and community buildings that support worship, outreach and changing patterns of use.
By combining thoughtful architecture, accessibility and flexible design, we help faith organisations create buildings that serve their communities today while remaining adaptable for the future.
