As part of the BBCs plans to expand its operations outside of London, the BBC Concert Orchestra were looking at having a new rehearsal and informal performance space located in Nottingham. The Nottingham bid was put together with us acting as Architect in partnership with NTU, RBH, Confetti and White Mark.
Our proposal was for a four-storey facility within the Creative Quarter of Nottingham, adjacent to the Confetti campus. Being located centrally, the Orchestra would have access to exemplary technical and studio facilities at Metronome next door, as well as the ability to hold performances at the Royal Concert Hall.
At ground floor, a double height rehearsal space with world class acoustics and projection for film scoring would provide a space for the whole orchestra to practise and perform in. Smaller practise booths would provide for individuals or small groups to use and the mezzanine houses seating for an audience of 90. There would also be a conductor’s room and instrument store at the mezzanine level. On the third floor would be a second conductors’ room, offices, library, further practice rooms and instrument store. At top floor level would be the café and lounge space as well as a kitchen, creating a floor for breakout time.
