As part of the continued expansion of Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies, part of Nottingham Trent University, Allan Joyce Architects collaborated with internationally renowned studio and venue designers White Mark to transform redundant space within Metronome into a professional performance venue and teaching facility.
The project creates an inspiring environment where students gain hands-on experience using industry-standard facilities, while providing a contemporary venue capable of hosting public performances, conferences and cultural events.
The building, formerly Nottingham's Post Office sorting depot, had previously been converted into a multi-use development, although its basement and ground floor remained unused for many years.
Our design completely reimagined these spaces, introducing a welcoming reception, bar and social areas alongside a state-of-the-art performance venue. The redevelopment has brought the building to life, creating a destination that supports education, performance and community engagement within Nottingham's Creative Quarter.
Flexibility was fundamental to the design. The venue accommodates audiences of up to 400 standing or 200 seated through the use of retractable seating, allowing the space to adapt to a wide variety of events.
A full-size stage, large-format screen and professional performance infrastructure enable the venue to host live music, theatre, spoken word, gaming events, conferences and industry showcases, while also providing students with invaluable real-world experience in a professional setting.
Since opening, Metronome has welcomed internationally renowned performers including Jools Holland, Sheku Kanneh-Mason and Badly Drawn Boy, demonstrating its success as both a teaching environment and a respected live events venue.
Allan Joyce Architects specialise in designing education, arts and performance spaces that bridge learning and industry. Working alongside specialist consultants, we create flexible venues that support teaching, public engagement and commercial performance while maximising the potential of existing buildings.
