Taddington, Peak District National Park

Allan Joyce Architects was appointed by Peak District Rural Housing Association to design a small development of affordable homes, helping local families remain within one of the UK's most desirable rural communities.

Carefully designed to respect the character of the Peak District National Park, the scheme demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can provide high-quality, sustainable homes that support thriving local communities.

The Brief

The demand for affordable housing in rural villages continues to grow, with many local people finding themselves priced out of the communities they grew up in.

Our brief was to create a development of attractive, affordable family homes that would complement the surrounding Conservation Area while providing comfortable, modern living designed for long-term occupation.

The Design

The scheme comprises four new-build homes, including three two-bedroom houses and one three-bedroom family home, carefully planned to make the most of the site while creating an attractive streetscape.

Inspired by the traditional architecture of the Peak District, the homes feature a simple terraced form that sits comfortably within the village. Existing dry stone walls were carefully retained and incorporated into the design, allowing the development to nestle naturally into its surroundings while preserving the character of the Conservation Area.

Inside, the homes provide bright, practical layouts designed to support modern family life, combining traditional architecture with contemporary living.

Designed for Rural Living

With no mains gas available, each property is heated by an air source heat pump, providing an efficient, low-carbon heating solution. Recognising the realities of rural living, every home also incorporates a traditional fireplace and chimney, ensuring the properties remain functional and comfortable during the area's occasional power outages.

By combining renewable technologies with practical design, the development delivers homes that are both environmentally responsible and well suited to their rural setting.
