St Nicholas Church is a grade I listed church with origins in the thirteenth century with alterations carried out in the C14th, C15th and C18th. The tower was rebuilt in 1712-18 in a gothic survival style. Allan Joyce has been church architect for over ten years and in that time. AJA have led many projects in both conservation repairs and extension works to improve the building for the local community into the future.
The latest works were for the replacement of tower lead roof, internal timber and stonework repairs following serious weather damage. Construction works were completed in 2023 and securing the historic structure of the tower and allowing access back to the bells.
AJA previous projects at the church included adding an extension to the north aisle to accommodate a WC and office facilities, external joinery works to the doors and quinquennial inspections. The extension is built in ashlar stone with a metal standing seam roof and frameless glazing scribed to the stone buttresses. Installation of the accessible WC allows the building to be used more regularly by the community. Extensive consultation and negotiations with statutory bodies and stakeholders were involved to achieve planning permission for the extension given the historic significance of the building.
