Heritage Repair and Conservation of Grade I Listed Entrance Gates

AJA was appointed by the National Trust to manage the repair and conservation of the Lion Lodge Gates at Belton House, Grantham, following significant damage caused by a vehicle collision. The gates form the principal southern entrance to the Grade I Registered Historic Park and Grade I Listed Belton House, requiring a sensitive conservation-led approach.

Our Role

AJA was responsible for preparing the repair specification, managing the tender process and administering the construction contract through to completion. Working closely with specialist stonemasons and blacksmiths, the project ensured the historic entrance was carefully restored using traditional materials and conservation techniques.

The Restoration Process

Following a competitive tender process, an experienced heritage stonemasonry contractor was appointed to undertake the repairs under AJA's supervision.

The restoration began with the careful removal of the stone lion sculptures from the gate piers, allowing the damaged masonry and decorative wrought iron overthrow to be dismantled and repaired. Specialist blacksmiths restored the historic metalwork, while damaged stone elements were repaired or replaced using Ancaster Stone to match the original fabric.

The masonry cores of the gate piers were strengthened before the repaired stonework was reinstated using traditional lime putty mortar. The restored capping stones, heraldic beasts and repaired gates were then carefully reassembled, preserving the character and significance of this important heritage asset.

As part of the project, the gates were redecorated using a modern protective paint system, providing improved durability while safeguarding the historic ironwork for the future.

The Result

The completed restoration has returned the Lion Lodge Gates to their original appearance while improving their structural resilience and long-term durability. Through careful conservation and skilled craftsmanship, the project has protected one of the National Trust's most significant historic entrances for future generations.
