Allan Joyce
Founder

Allan founded AJA in 1981 after studying architecture at the University of Nottingham. He ran AJA for 3 decades, and in that time created the strong team feel and AJA approach to architecture we still have today. He now works as a Consultant for us and still loves to get involved in projects and in the mentoring of junior members of staff.

At 18, Allan decided to become an architect when he realised that it would allow him to combine his practical skills and love of mental challenges. Over the years he has become an extremely talented and experienced architect, working on a whole range of projects. 

He has always been driven in his architectural work by his sense of duty to design buildings which are energy efficient, and that work like a machine, so that they perform well for those using them and also have as little impact on the environment as possible.

Allan’s favourite building is Ronchamp because of the way the building fits the site so perfectly and the fantastic lighting. It is a very sculptural building but it also very practical and so is a wonderful example of brilliant architecture being where art meets function.   

Outside of the studio, Allan loves fishing, watercolours and is always keeping busy with lots of DIY.
