Southwell Barn

The Original Site

Building works have been completed on a barn conversion near Southwell to create a beautiful family home. The original farmstead consisted of four single storey brick outbuildings one of which had almost entirely collapsed.

The Design

The design involved the sensitive restoration of the original barns including rebuilding the former building with reclaimed bricks and lime mortar. A contemporary glazed infill extension in the centre of the home provides the vital connection between the barns and forms a light filled living room with fantastic views across the open countryside. The adjoining walls were left as exposed brick to retain the original character and form of the buildings. A large roof lantern brings in daylight throughout the plan and creates an everchanging connection with the sky.
