From the beginning of the project, it was very important for the new centre to have great functionality whilst also looking modern and attractive, so it is welcoming to new recruits. The old garages on the site were no longer fit for purpose and so were demolished to make way for the new centre to be built. The new building was designed to be utilitarian in style with a simple colour pallet. The steel frame with a tapering eaves line creates a more sculptural form and together they give the centre a bold aesthetic.
The practicalities of repairing vehicles will take place in the workshop areas. The new workshop has large overhead doors to form vehicle access points which will provide the Regiment with easy access to the maintenance area for their military vehicles. As it is purpose built and designed for ease of use, this new workshop will ensure that the team can keep the fleet well maintained at all times.
The reservists will also study theory and mechanics at the site in the interactive classrooms at first floor level, where the acoustic folding partitions can be opened to form a conference space. This provides flexibility within the space to allow for large and small group training, but also future proofs the building as needs change over time. There are also large sections of glazing to the gym, offices and first floor training area to differentiate between the two primary building uses and to let in lots of natural light.

It was key for our clients that our design met clear sustainability standards so that it could achieve an ‘Excellent’ DREAM rating (an MOD alternative to BREEAM standards), which the finished building does. This means that the new centre is ahead of current national regulations and will perform to high sustainability standards in the years to come.
