A sustainable straw bale building hand built by the community for a charity to provide floristry outreach

Sustainable Community Building for Reach UK

AJA designed and helped build Flower Pod, an accessible, sustainable community building for Reach UK in Southwell, Nottinghamshire. Created for a charity supporting people with learning disabilities, the project provides an inclusive environment where people can develop confidence, learn practical skills and work towards greater independence.

The Scheme

Flower Pod is set within a thriving community garden, offering opportunities to enjoy gardening, wildlife, crafts and floristry while supporting wellbeing and social inclusion. Seasonal flowers and natural petal confetti are grown and produced for sale, providing valuable vocational experience and helping to support the charity's work.

Designed using the principles of inclusive architecture, the building creates a welcoming, accessible space that enables people of all abilities to learn, socialise and connect with nature.

The Design and Build

The building was constructed with the help of volunteers using load-bearing straw bale construction, creating a highly sustainable, low-carbon building with excellent thermal performance. Straw bales were fixed together using chestnut spikes before being compressed to form structural walls, which were finished internally and externally with breathable lime render.

A timber trussed roof with timber shingles and generous covered porches provides shelter for year-round activities, while the highly insulated structure is heated by a single log-burning stove, demonstrating how natural building materials can create comfortable, energy-efficient community buildings with minimal environmental impact.

The Result

Flower Pod has become a thriving community hub, providing an accessible and sustainable space where people with learning disabilities can build confidence, develop practical skills and engage with the local community. The project demonstrates how thoughtful architectural design can support charities in creating places that promote wellbeing, inclusion and independence.
