Allan Joyce Architects were appointed by REACH, a charity supporting adults with learning disabilities, to design a purpose-built supported living development in the heart of Southwell. Building on our long-standing relationship with the charity, having previously designed both their Flower Pod community hub and Southwell offices, the project provides specialist accommodation that enables residents to live as independently as possible whilst benefiting from 24-hour on-site support.
The brief was to create a safe, accessible and welcoming environment that supports independent living without compromising the quality of care. Located close to the centre of Southwell, the development enables residents to remain connected to local services, amenities and the wider community, promoting inclusion and enhancing quality of life.
Designed for 12 residents, the accommodation provides private bedrooms with en-suite facilities alongside generous communal living, dining and kitchen spaces that encourage social interaction while respecting individual privacy. Dedicated staff accommodation ensures carers are available around the clock, providing reassurance for residents and their families.
Constructed on the site of a former bungalow, the two-storey building has been carefully designed to sit comfortably within its residential setting. By maintaining a similar building footprint, increasing the separation from neighbouring properties and retaining the site's mature trees, the development integrates sensitively into its surroundings while creating a high-quality living environment.
Every resident has direct access to private outdoor space through either a ground-floor patio or first-floor balcony overlooking a large south-facing garden. These spaces support wellbeing while strengthening the connection between the building and its landscape.
Accessibility was fundamental to the design. Developed to Lifetime Homes principles, the accommodation provides level access throughout, generous circulation spaces, a platform lift between floors and accessible bathrooms, ensuring the building can adapt to residents' changing needs over time.
Environmental performance was considered from the earliest design stages. The building's south-facing orientation maximises natural daylight while incorporating solar shading to reduce overheating. High levels of insulation, thermal mass and photovoltaic panels work together to improve energy efficiency, reduce operational costs and create comfortable living spaces throughout the year.
The quality of the completed development has been recognised through industry awards, winning Best Purpose Built Accommodation at the LABC East Midlands Building Excellence Awards 2024. The project was subsequently shortlisted for the National LABC Building Excellence Awards, where it received Highly Commended recognition.
Working closely with REACH throughout the design process, Allan Joyce Architects delivered a specialist supported living scheme that balances accessibility, operational requirements and high-quality architecture. The project demonstrates our experience in creating inclusive environments for charities, care providers and community organisations, delivering buildings that support independence, dignity and long-term wellbeing.
