The Vision

To create a low impact environmentally sustainable house with a smart contemporary style that feels comfortable within a rural setting.

The Power of Positioning

Great care was taken in the positioning and layout of the new house to ensure it sits well on the site. The plot is square with well-established hedges on three boundaries. We positioned the main block of the house close to the northern boundary with large, glazed screens and tiled ceramic floors facing south to maximise the potential passive solar gain. The screens also allowed natural light to flood the house for as much of the day as possible, reducing the use of artificial lights significantly. In contrast, the north elevation has much smaller, high-level windows to retain as much heat as possible whilst still giving views along the boundary.

Internal Design

The footprint of the new home is L shaped, with a single storey North-South orientated wing housing the double garage, utility and downstairs WC. This leaves the whole of the East-West orientated wing for an open plan kitchen/dining area and separate living room. All of these rooms have incredible views out of the full height windows, creating a link between the internal and extremal space which is perfect for modern living.

As you head upstairs, there is long corridor along the back of the house which leads to all of the bedrooms. All four double bedrooms have floor to ceiling windows to mirror the ground floor. There is also a family bathroom and two ensuites which are located at the back of the house, meaning they are completely private.
