Allan Joyce Architects were employed from feasibility to completion to convert this former cart shed into the main offices for their integrated consultancy services team. The cart shed forms part of a group of historic farm buildings, which are designated as Grade II Listed buildings. Prior to conversion, the buildings were used as accommodation for the National Trust, for working holidays, school groups and private bookings. During the 1960’s the openings to the cart shed were in-filled with masonry, losing the aesthetic of the original cart shed.
An important element of the proposals was to remove the masonry in-fills and replace with a glazing system, this simple approach would reinstate the open cart shed aesthetic. The glazing was tinted slightly to conceal the offices internally and set behind the prominent brick and stone pillars. The main office space is open plan, providing flexible working space with state of the art optic / data systems, centred on a hot desking arrangement adopted by the staff.

The interior design solution draws on the original form of the building, celebrating key features, such as the King post trusses and stonework columns, within the open plan office area.
To provide contrast to this interior design proposals were put forward to the clients in the form of mood boards to develop how they wanted the contemporary aspects of the internal spaces to be decorated and furnished. The National Trust preferred the bright, zingy, green option, as it reflected their branding. Allan Joyce Architects helped realise this with wall and woodwork colours, carpets and cost effective furniture.
