The existing period property built by Arthur Goodchild in Nottingham had been unsympathetically altered in the 1970s. Allan Joyce Architects were commissioned to extend the house to the side and the rear to create a large family Living / dining /kitchen, an office and utility with a master bedroom on the first floor and to restore the front elevation to its original style.
The solution for the family room was to construct a contemporary single storey extension to the rear. A large skylight brings natural daylight into the rooms in the original part of the house, which otherwise would be darker as a result of the extension. The large sliding doors give a beautiful view of the garden, and once open, create a seamless connection with the terrace outside. This is reinforced using the same porcelain tiles internally and externally. Exposed rafter ends and cedar cladding add crisp architectural detailing to help soften the appearance to be more domestic.
The renovation of the home has had a hugely positive impact for the whole family as they are all able to spend time together in the large family room. They have also had lots of positive comments on the finished home from friends, family and neighbours.
