The Scheme

Allan Joyce Architects were employed to undertake alterations to a magnificent grade II listed Georgian Townhouse within a Conservation Area. Modern alterations that had been undertaken in the 1950s were in poor condition and unsympathetic to the grandeur and heritage significance of the building.

External Works

The 1950’s bays were carefully demolished and replaced with single storey stone bays with replacement mullions to the first floor windows that were traditionally proportioned and detailed to match the fenestration on the other elevations. Traditional sash windows with half height doors were carefully detailed to allow access to the southern terrace. Bespoke cast iron balustrades were designed to adorn the flat lead roofs of the new bay windows. The historic brickwork pointing was raked back by hand and repointed in lime mortar. The roof coverings were also replaced using green Westmorland slate laid in diminishing courses with lead rolled hips and ridge details.

Internal Works

The internal spaces were also renovated to be sympathetic to the Georgian townhouse. Modern flooring finishes were removed and replaced with stone slabs and oak flooring. The stone boards were carefully designed in a diagonal pattern with each joint planned to neatly align. Adding insulation and installing underfloor heating helped to improve the thermal comfort of the house.
