Creating Inspiring Early Years Spaces for Children and Families

Allan Joyce Architects were appointed to design a new two-storey children's centre alongside the refurbishment of an existing foundation unit, creating modern, flexible facilities that better support early years education, family services and community engagement.

The project delivers a welcoming and accessible environment where children can learn, play and develop, while providing staff with high-quality spaces to deliver training and support services.

Flexible Spaces for Learning

The building has been designed around the changing needs of young children, with open-plan, adaptable spaces that encourage learning through play and allow activities to evolve throughout the day.

The first floor provides dedicated training and support facilities, creating opportunities for professionals, parents and carers to access services in the same building. A platform lift ensures every part of the centre is fully accessible, creating an inclusive environment for all users.

Contemporary Design for Everyday Use

The contemporary building combines robust, low-maintenance materials with a warm and welcoming architectural character. Blue engineering brick provides durability at ground level, while larch timber cladding softens the upper storey and helps the building sit comfortably within its surroundings.

A standing seam zinc roof and generous entrance canopy create a strong visual identity while providing shelter to the accessible entrance, ensuring visitors are welcomed into the building whatever the weather.

Designed for Sustainability

Environmental performance was a key consideration throughout the design. High levels of insulation and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery reduce energy demand while maintaining a comfortable internal environment.

Deep roof overhangs and external louvres provide passive solar shading, limiting overheating during summer months while allowing low winter sunlight to naturally warm the building. The result is an energy-efficient children's centre that is comfortable, sustainable and economical to operate.
