New Self-Build Contemporary Dwelling

Client: Private
Budget: Undisclosed

A retired couple from Nottingham discovered the UK's largest self and custom build community site through a friend.  Looking for the opportunity to build their dream home, they contacted Allan Joyce Architects to help them to turn their dream into reality.

The purchase of a plot comes with a 'Plot Passport'. Providing the design of the dwelling conforms with the parameters and information set out in the passport, it is deemed to comply with Planning.  This offers a huge amount of scope for the design, which is extremely unusual yet exciting for an architect! Alongside this, the clients produced a generic brief, as they wanted to give Allan Joyce Architects complete freedom with the design.

AJA produced initial concept sketches to illustrate their ideas for the new dwelling.  In close consultation with the client, the design was then developed in plan, section and 3D models over a period of 2 months.  The client was totally engaged in the process, even producing their own model of the dwelling to start designing the garden!  The dwelling will be highly insulated and incorporate solar panels on the roof to supplement the hot water heating. The materials will be white rustic bricks with crisp Cor-ten streel reveals and antique bronze powder coated windows.

The design has been checked by the Graven Hill Development Company Ltd and has been submitted to Cherwell District Council to receive the Certificate of Compliance.  Work is due to start spring next year.
