New Rural Dwelling

Client: Private
Budget: Undisclosed

Our client purchased an existing property, in a stunning location, but it was in need of major refurbishment.  Unsurprisingly, the house was in Green Belt with amazing views in all directions.  The brief was to design a new replacement dwelling of circa 3500 sq.ft. with an additional 1000 sq.ft. of ancillary buildings.

The resulting design responded to the path of the sun and particular views from the site.  You enter into a courtyard to the north with minimal openings to the house aside from a glazed link signposting the front door.  Once through the door, you are greeted with panoramic views across open countryside with a bridge at first floor floating over your head.  The glass link helps to break up the mass of the dwelling and also enabled the different functions of the house to be separated.  A similar treatment was employed to connect the single storey kitchen.  The grass flat roof over the pool house adds more interest when viewed from the first floor bedrooms and enables a sunset terrace to be positioned to catch the last rays of the sun all year round.
