"Thank you for a lively inspired design – we’re loving it – especially the integration between the house and garden. We have really appreciated all your hard work, attention to detail and endless patience.”

Our client was looking to downsize from their existing period property and chose to build a new home within the garden of their existing house, in which to enjoy their retirement. The site is steeply sloping, in a Conservation Area and the grounds of a Grade II Listed Building.

The brief was to create a contemporary home filled with natural light that is environmentally conscious and energy efficient. Being avid gardeners, our clients were keen for the house to have a strong connection with its green surroundings. The house is designed to sit within the steep levels of the site to create a split level home, providing new views and connections with the garden.

The house is designed to follow Passivhaus principles; resulting in an ultra-low energy building that requires little energy for space heating or cooling. There is no conventional central heating system. Instead, high levels of insulation, thermal mass and an airtight building envelope, keep this home warm in the winter and cool in summer. A wood burning stove provides supplementary heating and eco technologies have been incorporated into the house including solar photovoltaic panels to produce electricity, rainwater recycling and a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system (MVHR).
