AJA were approached by a private client to redesign the rear elevation of a 1930s Nottingham house and provide first floor en-suites to two bedrooms. Working alongside local structural engineers, a scheme was devised to demolish the existing extension and completely remove the rear corner of the house to provide the client with a new 30m2 open plan kitchen, living and dining room.

Passive principles have informed the design of the new south-facing extension, with a deep overhang and to make the most of solar gains in the winter but prevent overheating in the summer. The large sliding glazing panels with level threshold open the house up to a new terrace and the garden to the south.
