Complete Refurbishment of a 1960’s House

Client: Private
Completed: 2009

Budget: Undisclosed

"The location was perfect and we had a picture in our minds of what the 5 bedroom mid sixties house could be.  Allan Joyce Architects helped us deliver that idea and looking back, the most important element of that process was the people we worked with.  From the very first meeting to completion, they listened to our ideas, guided us with their superb design knowledge, project managed the whole process and created a unique award winning environmentally friendly home. A big thank you to all of you for your enthusiasm, great ideas and humour!"

The clients purchased this 1960’s house primarily due to its location. They met Allan Joyce Architects at the Homebuilding and Renovating Show in 2007 and we were appointed to completely transform it from a drab house into a contemporary family home.

Extensions and alterations to the front and rear were considered to be within permitted development rights therefore planning was not required. The roof was re-roofed in slate, the external walls externally insulated and rendered, and the windows replaced with aluminium timber composite windows, to give the house a contemporary look. Green additions were incorporated into the house, such as the glazed front porch, which passively heats the house on sunny days, and a solar panel, which provides the family with hot water. The cedar projecting bay to the rear of the house connects the master bedroom with the garden.
