New Build Extra Care Facilities

Client: Anchor Trust
Completed: 2002

Budget: £2.3m

In 2000 Allan Joyce Architects worked in partnership with Anchor Trust, to investigate what housing for older people might look like in the future. This included a welcoming reception area, individual apartments with their own balconies, and shared facilities such as a restaurant and leisure area. We produced 3D visualisations to convey this, which was used on an Anchor Trust Stand at the Housing Conference in Harrogate, to show potential partners what could be achieved.

From this design model we went on to design the Extra Care scheme at Bill Baker Court, in Sutton-on-Sea. Successfully gaining planning permission for both the extra care scheme and a medical centre on the site. We also provided post contract design and coordination services for the contractor and interior design services for this scheme, which was completed in 2002.

The development provides 35 apartments, 6 of which have 2 bedrooms. A 2-storey atrium in the centre creates a bright sunny focus around which a communal, kitchen, dining room & residents lounge areas to provide social opportunities for residents & activities within the development.
