Allan Joyce Architects won a competition organised by Rushcliffe Borough Council to redesign the outdated shopping precinct in Cotgrave Town Centre. The original run of ground floor retail units were to be retained with one being converted to form a double-height entrance space for a new business hub to replace existing low-quality residential lets on the first floor. Before works were carried out, tenants were subject to intense overheating at the height of summer with shop fronts facing due south. The new scheme incorporates a large overhang and solar control glazing with improved insulation to keep the building warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

As part of the scheme, AJA have also redesigned the public realm, which takes inspiration from the town’s coal mining heritage and is due to be complete Autumn 2019.
