Building works have been completed on a barn conversion near Southwell to create a beautiful family home. The original farmstead consisted of four single storey brick outbuildings one of which had almost entirely collapsed. The design involved the sensitive restoration of the original barns including rebuilding the former building with reclaimed bricks and lime mortar. A contemporary glazed infill extension in the centre of the home provides the vital connection between the barns and forms a light filled living room with fantastic views across the open countryside. Sustainability was very important in the detailing of the project which features high levels of insulation throughout, air source heat pump underfloor heating and recycled rainwater harvesting.

Our client, Cynthia Napper said "Both Allan Joyce and Kerry Banner from AJA were a pleasure to work with and the whole project was conducted with vision, attention to detail, sensitivity to my wishes and good humour. The barn still looks like a barn, as it should, but inside is full of light, with airy, spacious rooms. It is simply stunning."
